I got scammed a few years ago. Fortunately I reacted in time, and so did my bank, and they froze a $6K purchase with my credit card. But I learned my lesson. I think artists are a prime target because most of us struggle financially so our mental barriers for this type of thing are lowered, and selling to strangers online is not unheard of (I myself have sold high-range artworks through contacts made exclusively thru social media)
