If there's no keyboardist, it allows there to still be textures or chords playing while playing a solo guitar line.

Check out Carlos Alomar's work with Bowie. He is the gold standard for rhythm guitarists. He could play lead guitar (see the Glass Spider concert video) but proudly considered himself a rhythm guitarist.

People here almost exclusively dropping names that come up when you google “guitar” is pretty much what I’m getting at. There’s a whooole lot of guitar music out there where lead and rhythm *parts* exist, but there’s no real distinction made between the guitarists playing them

95% of what you're playing is rhythm anyway. Many of the hailed "rhythm" and "lead" guitarists weren't strictly either also. They just made a name for themselves for one or the other. You still have to play songs...
