There are so many calculations you could do, but in the end I think this is the most important question: if you sold your art for price x, would you be happy with the sale? And then you can consider if you would be happy if you lowered that for someone. Definitely make sure you're covering the cost of supplies, and making something on top of that. Some people want artists to charge premium rates when they're starting out, but it's not always feasible.

Its your first sale, dont take so much pressure. You learn as you go.. what feels right you gotta price that. Mention the price you want them to pay, just say its after discount. They wouldn’t know. If you dont want them to go.. let them know they can negotiate a little.. its ok

I have a "friends/family" discount. The amount usually depends on what they are buying. It's generally, for my inner circle.

Have a gallery price list with your full professional prices on it- I use excel spreadsheets but I’ve been doing it a while. Allow for 50% commission to gallery (it’s often 40% + Vat so 50% rough sum is fine). Then identify which works are aimed at galleries- and which aren’t. These private sales can be discounted 50% occasionally, say once a year for studio clearance purposes (or raising cash quickly!). Always have your full gallery-ready prices printed out, so the client sees the benefit

People you know should want to pay you twice as much just to support you. Most of us underprice to start.

For me first couple of sales, yes, discounted rates applied. Now, I offer payment installments.

I remember when I went to my first art exhibition, I priced all my paintings too low, the organizer told me to raise the prices so that they could be in the same range as all the other artists, I sold my first painting for good money. I know is tough but the clear your prices are, the easier it will be for you. Time, plus size, plus art, plus materials etc.

Nope. Everyone is treated equally for me. I’m a people pleaser and if it was up to me, I’d end up giving my art/services away for free to people I know.
