I'm not a southerner, but I am a Croatian-American. You know how I celebrate my Croatian heritage? Making my grandmother's recipes, rooting for Croatia in the World Cup and Olympics, celebrating cultural traditions, and so on. You know what I don't do? Fly the flag of the Ustaše (Croatian fascist regime that ruled the country during WW2 and was complicit in the Holocaust). Why? Because I can find something about my heritage to celebrate that's not literally the worst thing my people ever did.
