It’s engagement farming, but charitably they aren’t considering others’ needs. They do make a contextual point about total cost of ownership (TCO) with IRS rates.
My TCO is higher than expected, roughly: Volvo in 2015 for $35k; $80/mo insurance; 100,000 miles @ 23mpg @ $3/gal; $200/yr oil changes; $1,500 in maintenance and repairs equals about $555/mo TCO, or $0.60/mile, making that 300 mile trip cost $180.
$1/mile is probably agenda driven, but calculating with only fuel leaves out context.
