Just read an edutopia article about a teacher banning AI use in her classroom. Thoughts? (I have mine, but want to check the pulse of teachers out there)

This is such a fluid topic. I see ways where ai use could enhance the learning experience of students and I could see the use hinder the learning experience. I think it will need to be addressed by specific subjects, grade levels, and forms of usage.

I've followed Chanea on Tw for a long time. She's a rock solid teacher who builds great relationships with her students. But it seems like she has a pretty narrow view of how AI could be used -- by her or her students ...

This is “do computers belong in a classroom” V2. It’s going to be a part of their world. There are upsides and downsides. It’s novel, so you’re already going to have their interest if you incorporate it. The difficulty is designing the lesson/assignment such that they’re processing and problem solving along with it AI. The article cited one assignment that flopped. So pivot. Workshop with other educators. I’ve seen some great suggestions, especially for ELAR!

I commented on the article, and I maintain now, that educators should ask a different question. I don’t think we need to be asking “Is AI appropriate?” Or “what is an appropriate way to incorporate AI?” I think we need to be asking what is developmentally appropriate for THIS age group and THIS group of students. How does what I’m teaching help meet the transfer goals I’ve set for this class?

whatever the assignment, the day after it's turned in everyone has to hand write a 1p overview of their paper in 30m. if they can't, they didn't write the assignment
