Serious question, if you are a writer who doesn’t read, why? I’m finding more and more authors I meet don’t actually read books and I’m baffled by this concept. It seems like being a chef but you’ve never eaten food??? Please explain. AuthorThreads

If you want to be a good writer, you need to be a good reader

I would love to be! As a teacher, I don't have time to read nor write except during the summer. However, when I do have time, reading the great poets makes me feel so intimidated and inferior that I want to give up on writing altogether, hahaha!

Don't ask why. Don't trust their opinion. They suck. Hard stop. Always be reading if you write.

I read, but I don’t have the extra time to read like someone who’s solely a reader. Writing a good book takes a lot of time and dedication, and combined with the fact I’m also a cover designer and a mom, there just aren’t enough hours in the day to read as much as I would. I wish, though, because I’m always behind on all the book trends and feel like I finally get to reading something that’s been out forever and a day. 😂

I think that too! It's okay to not read when you write but don't you read like at all? Is the real question. I am baffled when I hear writers say that.

Several years ago, I attended a writing conference and met a FICTION author who boldly stated that she did NOT read fiction. I was better at keeping my facial expression silent back then, but I’m pretty sure my feelings were crystal clear without a word necessary. I decided right there I would never read one of her books, and I haven’t.

I only stop reading when I'm writing, but even then I'm still reading here and there. Can't help it. I don't understand an author that doesn't read. How is that possible? Maybe they're just jumping on a trend the way every third person is becoming an author these days.
