Some of the blame for this lays squarely on other photographers, too. It's gotten better in recent years but I've see a lot of non-advice like "you've got to figure out your own worth" told to photogs who are trying to do it right.
Social is dominated by B2C photogs who sell flat rate / hourly projects. So a lot of photogs picking up their first commercial gig... they don't know what they don't know, and wind up pricing by feel. A few thousand bucks "feels" like a lot if you don't know better.
