In my abuela’s final weeks, she shared her hopes & dreams of traveling to Mexico to pay her “spiritual debts.” She never got to visit in this world, but I hope she was able to finally fulfill her heart’s desire. So many women of color I know in my family yearn for returning back to our homeland in order to reconnect. I love Chicago, but sometimes it can feel a lot to be in a country that constantly demands so much from you. My mother’s been sharing this longing to return to Mexico. And I get it.
