Just learned today:
The Inuit language has at least 50 different words for 'snow'. They are for describing different types of snow, although I only have one word for snow because I live in a tropical climate. I have no need to distinguish between the different types of snow but the Inuit do since they are surrounded by it.
Simply put, our language is shaped by the need for efficient communication.
