I'm at that age where my friends have started losing their parent. When I lost my dad I was actually hurt when the people I thought cared about me didn't show up for me in any way. Didn't even say takziah. I can't in good faith do that to anyone now. Even if we're not close, even if they don't know me well, I'll send my condolences. It means a lot. I know it does.
