I didn’t expect my first post here to be about my hatred of the new Japanese yen notes that just came out today, but here are my thoughts: Putting the yen amount in numbers only on the middle/bottom of the front of the notes makes it very difficult for non-Japanese people who can’t read 「壱万円」 on top in kanji. Yes, the bills are colour-coded, but people who aren’t familiar with the currency or language rely on numbers to quickly identify what they need to pay with.

As a bilingual long term resident, I can read and tell the difference, but for the hordes of tourists visiting currently? I feel like it is going to lead to people holding up registers as they try to pay with cash, giving Japanese media another reason to complain about foreigners here. Card payment is an easy fix, and yes, ThIs Is JaPaN, but these bills suck.
