If you set a carrier operator to 0Hz it will act as a sinusoidal waveshaper for its modulators. Many sample based SY77 patches route the AWM element into the AFM section and use this trick for a bit of parallel saturation. Add velocity sensitivity and you get some extra bite when you hit the keys harder. Pretty cool for 1989.
