Rinpa (琳派) is one of the major historical schools of Japanese painting. It was created in 17th century Kyoto by Hon’ami Kōetsu (本阿弥光悦) and Tawaraya Sōtatsu(俵屋宗達).Roughly fifty years later, the style was consolidated by brothers Ogata Kōrin (尾形光琳）and Ogata Kenzan（尾形幹山）. The Rinpa School’s popularity was revived in the early nineteenth century, largely due to the work of the painter Sakai Hōitsu (酒井抱一), who succeeded in establishing the Rinpa School in Edo.
