/signed I got down voted to oblivion on a reddit thread once where people were complaining about book 1's in a series "not being finished" because they can't stand alone. It baffled me that people could hold this opinion (I've stopped being surprised at reader quirks when I realized some people SKIP prologues, but I digress). I replied that book 1's in a series are only the first part of the story, and then ticked off like 10 wildly popular series with book 1's that can't stand alone. 1)

Sure, there needs to be a climax and it needs to be a satisfying stopping point, but it's not a fair expectation to read a book 1 of a series and expect the story to be "finished" in a satisfactory way. If you read epic sff/f and that's an expectation, I feel you're going to be disappointed far more often than not. 2)
