I feel like the average American wouldn't care about living in an authoritarian Christofascist theocracy if it meant that a thin veil of normalcy was kept in place. They wouldn't bat an eye at minorities in concentration camps and women getting the death penalty for miscarriages if it meant that gas was $2 a gallon, their 401ks kept growing, and Disney can keep making Star Wars and Marvel movies.
