Bringing up Oregon with people in Arizona is such a good litmus test for potential friendship. The unsolicited “Portland has gone to shit with all those rioters and homeless” (which is said here OFTEN) has me immediately responding with “Oh, really? I love Portland, I grew up driving there all the time and still visit often. The people are great and the food scene is incredible” and leaving knowing we have no shared values.

But then my parents moved to Hillsboro and we started to spend a lot of time in Portland. It became less and less scary and more and more “home”. Loved the Saturday Market!! They have since passed on and I seldom get back to Portland. I miss my Oregon roots. Now in Mesa! Let me know if you ever need a hit of Oregon granola🌲. ☺️
10 小時內	oceangal456	Visiting Portland this week and NOTHING I have heard from acquaintances in AZ has been true. I have encountered fewer homeless here than in Phoenix metro area. It is beautiful and the people are very friendly. It’s amazing how many believe the streets are full of homeless. They are wrong and need to stop listening to others and experience things themselves. The food scene is incredible!

Now, as you pointed out, the attitudes people express about certain big cities have become a shorthand for their entire world outlook. It's not just people from my (fairly rural) hometown who don't like cities.
