Top performers shouldn't automatically be made leaders. The Peter Principle states that “the members of an organization climb the hierarchy until they reach the level of maximum incompetence”. It's unfortunate seeing highly skilled people with deep subject-matter expertise be put into leadership roles where they're not at all focused on applying those skills anymore, and often don't necessarily want to be leaders nor do they get leadership training.
