Because I’m dull I noticed that a chap called Ben Pattison had just gone second on the all time list in the UK for 800m, still behind Seb Coe from way back in 1981. I then noticed that Coe’s World Record of 1:41.73 not only stood for 16 years but has STILL only been bettered by less than 1 second, down to 1:40.91, which represents an improvement of about only 0.8% in 40 years! For comparison in the same time the 100m record has gone from 9.95 to 9.58, or 3.8%, or 5x as much!
