Regarding dragons and wyverns: they both derive from ancient words meaning serpent because snakes are scary. Western dragons were originally more like sea monsters and their attributes have changed with the folklore around then. Wyvern and Viper share an origin. Mythology and folklore are interesting and learning all the different variations and how they are used in fiction is fun. So, my advice is just relax and enjoy the variety of monsters.
