There are at least 3 Appalachias: The Central Appalachian coalfield, which has largely defined the region; “official Appalachia,” which includes dozens of counties that are largely unlike those counties except for income levels; and “Greater Appalachia,” a cultural region that goes all the way to Oklahoma and largely overlaps with the counties that voted for John Kerry in 2004 but John McCain in 2008 (thus rejecting Obama). Kentucky is the only state with all its counties in Greater Appalachia.
