I was invited to a very nice lunch soiree. Aside from another Asian-American woman, who was of Korean heritage, and I, all the other women were white Pat me on the back for not snickering when the Korean-American woman and another guest met: Woman 1: "Hi, I'm Sharon" Woman 2: "Hi, I'm In-jeong" Woman 1 (makes a dismissive hand gesture): "Sorry, I'm not going to remember that" Woman 2: "Call me Angel" It's funny as in tragicomic, because I've seen this many times before

I was at an event years ago where people were using their last names Me: My last name is Kimeria Person (who was sort of the moderator): I’ll just call you Kim Me( loudly): No. You will call me Kimeria I’m usually not assertive, but something about being too lazy to even attempt to properly pronounce my name pissed me off. Also, my last name is very close to a Japanese name (Kimura) so there have been a couple of funny incidents where people assume I’m Japanese before meeting me.

Karen bares 99.9% of the fault here. No question she was rude. However, on English names, people do need some help.

I don’t remember anyone’s name, so at least I’m universal in it. I do try to make an effort when being introduced to make sure I pronounce the name correctly. I always let people know it tends to take 6 interactions before my brain will associate their face with their name. My name has been mispronounced my whole life and it’s a white girl name, so, yeah.

I hate that. My ex had an uncommon name and so many people had the tendency to give him their own nickname. And he would let them do it but it always made me angry. Because it’s lazy and disrespectful in my opinion. Even if after trying, you come up with a nickname at least engage and try to learn.

I would worry that I would mispronounce the name and cause offence

It calls ignorance. Some don’t even want to learn how to pronounce 😊

I have several Chinese students who have 2 names to make it easier for non Chinese speakers… I always ask their actual names and practice until I get it right. I wouldn’t want someone calling me by the wrong name
