We read "Tears of a Tiger" by Sharon M. Draper in 8th grade, which was inappropriate for our age but masterfully written and an exceptional novel. I also read Jane Eyre in 9th grade as a part of an assignment where everyone in the class was given a different literary classic (think Pride and Prejudice, 1984, Lord of the Flies, Jane Eyre, etc) to do our final projects on. There were also short stories and poems I remember writing essays on, but can't remember the exact names of.

When I was in high school we read The Woman Warrior by Hong Kingston, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Wharton. I have taught many female authors over the past 20 years such as Glaspell, Jackson, Hurston, Atwood, Cisneros, Walker, Tan, and Erdrich. All of these authors have female protagonist in their stories. And this year I will assign the Binti series by N. Okorafor and The Gods of Jade and Sadow by Moreno-Garcia.

The house of the spirits by Isabel Allende, The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, A Doll’s House, the Scarlett letter, a streetcar named desire, and the handmaids tale are the ones assigned I remember…. This was for IB English in 2001/2001.
