Entry level interior designer here! You can be an interior decorator without a degree. Which usually doesn’t extend beyond residential (& the odd mom and pop style retail/coffee shop maybe) But it’s just that- decorating & not designing to a degree of architectural context, knowledge, & education in understanding human behavior. Then you have to get your certifications. Most commercial firms won’t hire someone without the degree or related degree & certification. It’s not just paint & pillows!

I think many designers who went to school are unhappy with people who didn’t go to school and are trying to get into design. Because it makes it seem like the degree was for nothing if “anyone can be a designer”. Really, we should all be encouraging each other and specifying what new designers should be learning for them to be accepted among those with degrees. Different areas of careers, people value skill over degree and vice versa. If you’re meant to design, nothing and no one will stop you 🩷

Maybe. But the degree gives you credibility and access to wholesale pricing
