The word translated “sin” is hamartánō, meaning “To sin, to miss a mark on the way, not to hit the mark.” It’s also an archery term used whenever the archer missed the bullseye.
1 John 3:4 tells us the mark is regarding God’s Law, because to miss the mark is lawlessness.
Leviticus 19:2 is the expectation, holiness as God is Holy.
So to sin, according to Scripture, is to miss the mark of God’s perfect holiness according to God’s Law. Which is why “all have sinned” and “there is none righteous”.
