Our school has no homework, better for everyone, and test scores are better

Most teachers should opt out of giving it. It's inherently unequitable because we can't control the environment kids go home to. The rare times I do give it, I make sure it won't take more than ten minutes and I'm generous with accepting it late.

Context needed. What age? What subject? Do take home projects count? What about group work? I've got a 3rd, 6th, and 8th grader. My wife is also a teacher, so I have wildly different expectations of homework

Daily unfinished work = homework Recommended reading = 20 min per night. Can be done independently, with family, audiobooks, read aloud, etc. No log necessary, but honor system. Should take about 30 min to complete

Unless they’re in advanced classes, don’t give it!

I think American education has put an overweighted emphasis on homework. I’ve seen college credit pathways in high school crush students spirit and soul with the sheer volume of work. Learning work ethic is the necessity more than expect massive review and/or self guided learning at home. We have it backwards right now.

Do they nees practice in the skill? If not then sure. Do they have support if they are struggling? If not yes- opt out and seek non credit practice. Are they doing ok, but need consistency, support and structure? Then they need homework. I hate homework because unless the family is committed to education, it’s not helpful.

It amazes me how much some parents will do for their children, but draw the line in participating in their education.

I barely give homework (like maybe a max of an hour and a half for the whole week minus the daily 15 minutes of reasing) and they have a week to do it… usually it includes studying for tests. No spelling tests. I will not force them to do it. I do observe them at school and take notes. If i notice that their grades could be better, i’ll suggest they do their homework
