Decided to stop paying $20/mo by buying my own cable modem. Found a good one on FB marketplace for $70 (vs 180 new). Swap goes smoothly after sharing its MAC with ISP etc. Unexpected upside - average latency dropped from ~30ms to 15ms. I know some gamers who would sell a kidney for that kind of gain. Wondering why. Either that old cable modem needed a reboot or it was crap.
