As much as I dislike the Chinese government, the dispute over Taiwan at least has grounding in international law. The modern Chinese state has never acknowledged Taiwan's independence. Contrast with Russia, who 30 years ago not only recognized Ukraine's independence, but guaranteed it would both respect and protect Ukraine's established borders.
