As a music lawyer I’ve seen too many artists shell out thousands of dollars for a feature just to get blocked from the DSPs. Want to actually release that song? Here’s what you need to do…

(1) you need a Side Artist Agreement with the featured artist. This will spell out all the specifics of their involvement in your song, confirm what publishing splits and master points they will get, and any other things they need to do as part of the engagement (social media promo, music video, etc.). Believe it or not, if that artist is signed this is only the second most important step.

I've been trying to get some decent collabs going but too many people ask for tooo much $$ upfront for no guarantee of an ROI. It's a tough investment when I can put that same $$ into my own work

Yes everything you’re saying is so on point, it might prevent me from buying a feature again because famous artists will see this as a head ache if the indie artist is this business savvy. But I agree with you 1000%.

When I started my career as an artist I wasted too much money on features that never saw the light of the dayv
