Unpopular opinion: there is nothing wrong with the NYT publishing guest op/ed pieces by conservatives and Trump supporters, even ones that think Trump can win on character. It is similar to Fox airing Pete or Jessica Tarlov. I want to know how the 45ish percent of voters that support Trump justify this position, which is largely unfathomable to me. I have major issues with the NYT’s judgments about what news to cover and emphasize. But, I have no problem with the op/ed section.

Telling that your examples for Dems on Fox are two extremely articulate and effective commenters. Now, where are the thoughtful takes from MAGA??? The anger isn’t about the platforming of an alternative view, I’m pretty sure the anger is directed at expending precious journalistic real estate on buffoonery.

Agree in part -- that is what op/ed pieces are for. But as @ngrossman81 points out here, the Lowry piece contains obvious false claims. Under a reasonable editorial standard, those falsehoods should be disqualifying.

Nah... All these rw editorials are full of lies. Sure all perspectives blah blah. But nope to propaganda and lies.

Hi, former opinion page editor here. No, there is nothing wrong with running columns or having columnists on staff to voice the conservative or Republican or even Trumpian opinions. In fact it is desirable, as you say. BUT those columns can't be demonstrable nonsense. They have to hold water. They have to be solid, honest and good columns. You can't run dishonest gibberish just in the name of both sidesedness.

I agree -- that's exactly what opinion sections are for. As long as an individual opinion piece doesn't misstate facts, promote violence, use hate speech, etc, and as long as a balanced range of opinions are represented across the section, it's fine. The trouble with Trumpists is that they often can't state their opinions without crossing one or more of those lines.
