I had a dog (Jack coincidentally enough) and a cat that got on amazing… when I moved out and got my own cats, my dog came to stay with me at times and got on with my cats too. Introduce them and take it from there.

Make sure the cat has places to be by itself and away from the dog, perches, hides, fenced off rooms, it’ll help the cat feel safe and adjust easier, giving a break if they aren’t ready to interact with the dog.

Introduce them with the leash on so if the cat get scared and run the dog can’t chase. If the dog is trained a couple of times not letting him chase should be enough for him to get the message. After,just make sure to let some rooms with the door open enough that just the cat can enter and have high places in every room so the can share the space and get used to eache other smells and being safe and comfortable at the same time. I have 2 🐱 and a 🐶 and the cats are the ones ruling the house.

The cat will teach the dog to respect boundaries. I’ve not had issues with cats & dogs getting along, but you have to be willing to let the cat handle it. Just start slow with short introductions and go from there.

We have 4 cats (and do rescue) and two dogs, a gsd and a shiba inu. Cats have multiple towers, a cattio and two gated off areas the dogs cant get into. No issues. The gsd will put her head in the pile of sleeping/grooming cats so she gets groomed too. The shiba mostly ignores them but will sleep on the same pet bed and shares her kennel with them. Take it slow and be mindful of their behavior. And dont expect it to be easy right away. Give them several months.

When Sadie (dog) first came home, we limited her to one room with a baby gate so that Cal (cat) could easily get all over the condo.

Lots of good suggestions for intros on this thread. I have Scotties w similar temperaments to JR… terriers. It just takes a little time and patience. Mine chase the cats and the cats go right back at them. Hard to tell who is chasing who. Don’t give up the dog. They will adjust just fine.
