How did the Paralympics begin?
The games originated at Stoke Mandeville Hospital under the initiative of Ludwig Guttmann, a Jewish neurologist who came to England as a refugee from Nazi Germany. Before he escaped that regime, he spared dozens of Jews from detainment by admitting them to his hospital, sometimes inventing diagnoses on the spot in front of Nazi authorities. We hold Guttmann's archive here in our collection, including these wonderful photos of the 1964 Tokyo games.
