We had to help our daughter every night until we learned a trick from Parenting with Love & Logic. We told her she could have a 1/2 hour of homework help each night so she needed to go through all of it before meeting with us. We rarely helped after that because she figured it out.

Why do you have homework. At 12 years old she should be able to work independently.

I never learned anything in math until I did the homework. If you don’t apply the skills, you never acquire them.

In order for new math concepts to be ingrained it takes repetition for most people. My daughter is around the same age and has math homework every night. She asks for help but we resist the urge to do things for her instead reminding her to reread the problem, remember what you did on the last problem and things like that. She is slowly learning that she can do more than she thought she was capable of.

Math, accounting, foreign language, programming, and statistics all take practice. Learning by doing

Don’t do her homework for her. I know it’s hard, but it doesn’t help her. If she can’t do a question, encourage her to ask the teacher for help with it the next day. It’s more helpful for her and her teacher to see which questions she’s struggling with

I think outside of ensuring they do their homework you shouldn’t do it with them or check the homework. How else will the teacher know where they need help.

All the parents bitching about their kids having homework is amazing! I have zero sympathy. I had homework every night from 6th to 12th grade. College really wasn't a party either.

Every single moment of my adult life, I've been pissed off because public school was far too easy. I was at the top of my class without having to really work. I wasn't prepared, and college became torture. The question isn't why is the math teacher giving homework. You should be pissed that the other teachers aren't.
