Reread one of my favorite 1970s Batman stories, DETECTIVE COMICS #455 “Heart of a Vampire” by Elliot S Maggin and Mike Grell. I wrote about this one in my book THE BATCAVE COMPANION. Mike Grell told me that he modeled the vampire after Christopher Lee. After seeing the penciled pages, editor Julius Schwartz told him to change the vampire’s look. Also, Bernie Wrightson was supposed to be this issue’s artist and had done thumbnails for the story, Grell used those thumbnails for his art.
