My grandma was strict about no nicknames on kids for this reason. My cousin’s 3 kids had nicknames that were unrelated to their legal names. The adults realized there was an issue when the oldest had a meltdown, adamant that his little sisters’ names were “Happy & Smiley” and he was “Bubba.” A lot of discoveries came from that one situation.
