I typically see rhyming poems by the following three groups of people: - Amateurs - People who do not study contemporary poetry - People who are writing for the masses and not for people who actually read poetry regularly (ex. Amanda Gorman’s audience) There is nothing inherently WRONG with rhyming, but most people who are serious consumers of contemporary poetry don’t like it. That being said, there is an audience for everything, so if you like rhyming poetry, keep at it and you will find

👏🏻 some readers want to be entertained by rhyming, which is whimsical and obviously fine, but they can also be entertained by deep thought & word choice that can go outside the limitations of rhyme scheme. Some people critique only based on what they know.

I have a strong preference against rhyme. At least rhyme schemes/patterns. But sound is fun to play with and use. To me, the "issue" with rhyme is one of accessibility. In that anyone can rhyme. Which is good! Because it enables anyone to get into poetry and enjoy it and explore it! But it also feeds into what you describe. It may be easy to employ. But it's NOT easy to employ well. Like form poetry, it requires mastery. A certain extra bit of skill. But that's true of all good poetry.
