Sidewalks are treacherous (roots, cracks, etc) and people don’t look when pulling out of homes and businesses. Street is more consistent. I do both but yeah.

I walk/run in the street to avoid those walking their dogs on super long retractable leashes while not paying attention, groups of people all walking next to each other and paying no attention to the fact that they’re not the only ones on the sidewalk, bikes/scooters that are too afraid to ride in the bike lane if present because it’s blocked by delivery trucks, ride shares, city vehicles, and morons that think they can park there just for a sec to run in to grab a fresh pressed juice, etc….

Because I have better visibility. If anyone is hiding in bushes or doorways (both of which I’ve seen) and wants to jump out at me I will see them coming well before they’d be able to lay a hand on me.

It’s easier to run on Asphalt than cement . Happy running homie 🫶

Navigate around people walking themselves or their dogs as well as cars exiting driveways and you very quickly learn the street is a much better alternative

I run long distances in the city on a daily basis. The city sidewalks are often dangerous or made dangerous (various objects, people, dogs, uneven sidewalks) and sometimes the sidewalks disappear completely. I do whatever is safest for me and sometimes that is running in the street / bike lane.

Sidewalks slope to the gutter, so I get shin splints from the constant uneven ground

Sidewalk is also more likely to have garbage you can slip on, broken glass, people who try to touch you as you jog past them (yup), and don’t forget how loads of people in LA don’t bother picking up after their dogs

Because they've got ambition and drive.
