As a mom of a new cross country runner what are things to tell my child as they run a race that are actually encouraging and not annoying? Sometimes I wonder about the parents on the sidelines.

The fact you are even asking this questions means you will probably not be like them 😉

During the race: "You got this" "Run *your*race" "finish strong" and just "Go (name)!" I think they just want to see you there and hear your encouragement.

“You did great.” “I am proud of you.” “You looked strong out there.” “That must have been really hard.” “Great job.”

When my daughter was first running, and I had cc experience from HS, college and as a coach… we still came up with a daughter “approved” cheer list. Which I messed up constantly, but was an endless source of amusement anyway.

Find a place on the course that will be a challenge and give encouragement. "Power up the hill" "keep the focus"

Was a HS XC coach for several seasons. I think during just remind them to breathe and say Great Job Kiddo. After, say I’m proud of you and your effort. Being present and proud are the best thing I see parents do.

When my daughter ran CC she said everything people said was a blur unless it included her name. So….whatever encouraging you choose to say, work their name into it :)

I would advise against, "Break a leg!" Better suited for performing arts.
