They may not have had the opportunity to tattoo POC or been trained how to tattoo them. I think it’s best if it’s kept out of the portfolio if they have no experience vs showing it and it’s not well done!

Typically it’s because people do not know how to photograph melanated skin. It requires different lighting and finesse than photographing someone with light skin and a dark tattoo. Dark ink on dark skin means little to no contrast which means the piece may not read well over a photo. Tattoo artists should absolutely take it upon themselves to learn how to do that though. I have noticed that because of this lack of knowledge in the industry, a lot of POC just go to someone who is also a POC

It is a lot trickier to get the pics of the tattoo, that has been my experience anyways. I love tattooing melanated skin though.

where I live the majority of people in the population have lighter skin,when I have tattooed POC then the lighting often makes the skin tone appear lighter, so it can often be hard to tell unless the skin tone is quite dark,My wife’s parents are caucasian and Caribbean,her skin is much different to tattooing a caucasians,I have tattooed her many many times and understand there’s a finer limit of overworking the skin,but in the photos with lighting Her skin looks lighter than it actually is

Bc if there’s non in their portfolios poc typically don’t take a chance and go to them, and a lot of artists are stupid and if they don’t have experience w dark skin tones they won’t seek out that experience. I think it’s stupid. Pocs should have access to good tattoo artists and we should want to expand our market. Everyone has skin why stop with only half the color spectrum? I think anyone who changes appearances should learn how to work with everyone, barbers, tattooers, laser techs etc.
