Music Threads have you ever come up with a riff or melody that sounds familiar but you can’t figure out from where? Do you just press forward or retire the song?

press forward. If it continues to bug you, or you figure it out, just challenge yourself to improve the offending passage

If I can’t nail it down i proceed. It is usually in the vein of something but not a total ripp off

Maybe someone else will recognize the melody and set me straight.

Gotta keep pressing! Having a good memory can be a curse sometimes, and this is definitely one of them. Hate to see a potential banger get tossed bc I-IV-V is I-IV-V’ing. Ya know? (FWIW, I was doing the *exact* same thing yesterday.)

Once when I was in a band, I came up with this cool finger picked progression and brought it to band practice. We worked on it some, but the drummer kept saying it sounded familiar. About an hour later, he figured it out, went out to his car and got this brand new CD that had just come out. I had written "we are going to be friends" by white stripes.

One day I brought a riff to practice that I thought sounded pretty cool until the other guys pointed out that it was Hotel California. Pretty big oversight on my part
