I love prodding holes in narratives and arguments (including my own). Though, it's much easier to be critical of what others say than being critical of what I say.
It's less about being egoistic and more about that feeling that prodding holes in your argument is kind of like playing chess where you are also the opponent. Too much, and it can easily turn into rumination or, at the very least, overthinking. Too much cognitive load at some point.
