I tell people that the Kansas City they know of is in MO. It’s where the Chiefs & Royals play, the high rise downtown, the performing arts, world class museums, the zoo, and everything KC is known for. There are vast suburbs on the MO side too. KC KS is much smaller and poorer, but they do have the Speedway and some nice development around that. The third piece is the suburbs of Johnson County KS which has wealth and over 600k people, but little culture. Gotta hop across the state line for that

Kansas City is Missouri. The Kansas part is just urban spill over. Everything cool is in Missouri

There’s a fine line

The Missouri side is the major city, with many well-known companies in the creative and service industries (Hallmark, H & R Block) along with major banks, foundations (Kauffman), and financial wealth. The Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals both play there. The Kansas side was primarily a working-class city with the second largest rail hub in the U.S. (after Chicago) and at one time, home to most of the second largest stockyard in the country (after Chicago). 1/2
