Maybe kind of gendered, but I remember girls being really into Sweet Valley High and Babysitters Club and boys reading S.E. Hinton. Might have just been my school, though. And it was definitely not on the level of Harry Potter.

Agreed. I didn't read King til I was an adult, and as a younger Gen X, Harry Potter looked like kiddie lit to me. Closest I came was a Dean Koontz phase that I had in common with some buddies.
