For me early on in my singer/songwriter career it was that you shouldn’t say no to anything and that everything was great exposure. In truth, there were plenty of things that I could have said no to, I ended up burning myself out and learning “exposure” is just a better sounding way of saying you’re not getting paid.

Being told that everything had to be perfect in the recording…It didn’t. Being told that we had to work with a major producer in a high end studio… We didn’t.

After working in a piano bar for 7 years I was told by some random guy: “you need to learn as many Broadway showtunes as possible. That’s what people really want to hear.” Me: I don’t really care to learn showtunes and you’re the first person to specifically mention them. Rando: Well, if you ever want to play in New York or on a cruise ship, you’ll have to learn a lot. Me (doing this as a side gig from my full time career): There is literally no chance of either of those things happening
