Thank God for Geely stepping in, but why did it take a Chinese company to rescue what was supposed to be our pride and joy? It’s time we ask the tough questions. What went wrong with Proton? And more importantly, how do we ensure we don’t lose the next big thing Malaysia creates?

My take is that technology transfer was not done effectively, lack of r&d and implementation to compete with other manufacturer and peoples demands. All models feels and perfoms the same just different size and styling. There wasn't any appeal to it. I realise most manufacturers would at least produce 1 performance car just to showcase their technology, performance and capabilities. They just never did. Was a waste to sell but I guess it was opportunity to cash out and make some.

Totally agree, I was in SK recently and their H & K cars are totally modern, very impressive. In Malaysia we still have to deal with old junker Wiras and Wajas with their non working lights and white exhaust smoke

I don’t think there’s anything to do with pride. Most Koreans like the Japanese prefers European cars but it’s way more expensive to own one due to tax. If they hv a choice, they will not be buying Hyundai or Kia.

I've read some article some time ago which argued that it was due to competition. In Malaysia, we had 2 companies but instead of competing to improve, they created a duopoly each with their own non competing target market to guarantee profitability without needing much innovation. South Korea encouraged competition among its car companies. Some failed but those that remained came out stronger because they fought hard.
