I firmly believe — have believed for at least twenty years, following Genette, and maybe longer — that bad art tells us more about what art is than great art does. As soon as we start evaluating things for their *aesthetic* effects — “this writing sucks, it’s so predictable, the word choices are ridiculous” — we are dealing with it as an art object, just like we would a painting or photograph or (sometimes) a sunset
