Sure, generative AI can generate an entire book with a simple prompt, but is it any good? Should I be threatened by that?

Many editors won’t edit an AI-generated manuscript because it takes so much work to fix them, it’s practically ghost writing. Then again, sometimes it’a hard to tell if it’s AI or just not great writing. But by AI stories flooding the market, it makes it harder to find the good stories.

I tried it with short stories. All of them are like the same bad written story but the subject changes. I cant really even put my finger on why they all read the same. The same sentences are used, the same style… even when you prompt the change in style it kinda stinks like finding an alien corpse.

you better go and try this and that yourself, then think how this can help you to progress, instead of sitting tight and wait until others do it first. be strategic, dont be Luddite

I think the fears are that A) as bad as it is now, it's (probably) only going to get better and more threatening, and B) it adds to the overcrowdedness of the marketplace for people to be able to generate whole novels in moments, making it ever-harder for most human writing to fight through the noise and find an audience.
