It might be hard for some younger folks to believe. But in the 00s, we all thought tech companies and social media would be used to destroy the hold the far right has on our society instead of purposely giving fascists views special treatment.

We really did. All the media back then depicted cyberspace as a place of total freedom and information. Then it got taken over by guys who find freedom an ugly concept, and businessmen who use the rulebook for Monopoly as their personal bible.

Weird how from the start we were told that Wikipedia was the one to watch out for, for disinformation but that one has (so far) been the least worse of the bunch.

FWIW, it *kinda* was. Occupy (as unfocused as it was), the Arab Spring, MeToo & BLM.

the internet is creating a global society wherein people operate less out of fear because we know more about each other. and i think it was in Cuba a professor told us how ppl used facebook to organize a social movement that affected real change in the country, which has happened in the US as well. the ppl in charge are still trying maintain control on these new digital avenues, but their efforts will eventually prove futile.

It's the flip. They flipped social media from originally bringing us closer to friends and family and now forcing us to interact with strangers and groups. Happened at the same time Cambridge analytica fucked us as well

Free Software still exists. Check out Linux, and anything else that's GPL or GNU licensed software. That means you can see the source code!
