When you get a shelter pet, do you keep the shelter name, or give them a new one?

We changed her name. She didn’t answer to the name they gave her, anyway.

When I adopted my dog from the shelter, her name was Lucy. She didn’t really respond to it and it just didn’t fit her. Often shelters just have to name them something because they don’t know the names of the dogs or they never had a name. It’s so easy to teach a dog a new name. Her name is now Rhea Sunshine. ❤️

We changed our pups’ names. They were super young (only a couple months) so they learned their new names quickly.

The animal sanctuary that rescued my boy from a kill shelter named him Boko because he only had a case #. I didn’t think Boko fit, so he is now proudly named Bruce. 💙

If it fits them & I like it, I keep it. If not, I change it.

Depends on the animal and the name. We have a white cat that the shelter named Blanco. I mean, come on. So he became Nietzsche. Louis stayed Louis because he was a rescue from Louisiana named after Armstrong, so we were down with it. Pepper Potts became Sabrina because I love Audrey Hepburn and my husband and kid didn't like the name Pepper (Potts would have gone regardless). All the rest are foster fails we named.

We rename. Adopted 2 cats once named Quark and Little Dove. Both stupid names. lol. We changed them to Fritz and Little Bird (call her Birdie). Next adopted Dwight and he never responded to that at all so we changed his name to Murphy. Now he comes running when he hears it.

New life. New start. New name. Shelter staff don't really get to know the animal before they have to name it, so the name likely doesn't fit anyway.

It depends on the situation. If the shelter had found them as a stray we would change the name. If they were surrendered we kept the names even if we didn’t particularly care for them. They already had upheaval no need for a name change too.
