Film photographers! What’s your tips for getting film overseas, minimal X ray exposure and chatting up airport security? 1. I run the zip lock sandwich bag 2. Empty all film canisters 3. Slip a sacrificial roll of 3200 film 4. Trying a label 5. And I’ll say: “what are the chances of getting a hand check from you today? I have some sensitive film here.” It has a good strike rate. Then I’ll post it home whenever possible. Wish me luck, wish us all luck, and write to your local airport 🤝

The good folks at the TSA in the US were happy to hand check my film. The French took a little convincing, but they obliged. Because I was very nice about it.

8 小時內	Robert Fernandez r0bvrt	I put it in a lead bag and ask them to hand check it because it’s film Never had any issues except one time a guy had me empty the canisters out of the bag and put the bag through the scanner resulting in me getting pulled aside so he can go through the empty lead bag because it’ll set off the scanners 😂
12 小時內	cashmere.conan	Just went through JFK with about 32 rolls of 120 film and simply asked for a hand check and they had absolutely no problem or fuss. But I will say, this was terminal 1 and everyone working that day was actually lovely and helpful. I’ve flown out of JFK dozens of times and that is a RARITY. So it all comes down to spotting someone friendly if you can

19 小時內	Nathaniel Perales nathanielperales	I’m currently in India traveling from LA > Dubai > Delhi > Goa > Delhi > Dubai > LA… the only spot I had trouble was Goa to Delhi and that’s only because they didn’t speak English very well. I simply asked someone who did speak Hindi to translate for me and the agent understood and hand checked for me. I used to use the domke bags and just put them through the x ray but I found it didn’t protect the film. I would still lose detail and the images would be hella grainy and low in contrast.

Do not give them your film until you know they’re hand checking and watch that they don’t put it into the x ray. It is your right to get them hand checked.
20 小時內	Tom Minty unplugdphoto	I've flown to several countries with lots of film. 1) USA TSA are generally receptive to hand checks. 2) most European airports are hit or miss. Heathrow sucks. 3) just be upfront most agents are happy to help. 4) don't sweat it if they do get scanned by the regular hand luggage xray. I had a trip last year were multiple rolls up to 800 took multiple scans. No issues. Just stay away from the new CT scanners.
